What is Green-lipped mussel and what makes it so special?

The green-lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus) is a very special type of mussel that only lives in the pure and still unpolluted waters of New Zealand. Synofit does not use extracts from the Green-lipped mussel but uses GLMax®, a unique stabilized liquid containing the whole and pure green-lipped mussel. As a result, all natural ingredients remain present including all Omega-3 fatty acids such as EPA, DHA, ETA, ETE and DTA including the glycosamino glycans such as glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate. Contrary to dried extracts and powders Synofit does not use heating in their process that is known to result in loss of activity of various beneficial ingredients.

Why does Synofit not use an extract from Green-lipped mussel?

Synofit does not use an extract of Green-lipped (also Greenshell mussel) mussels since extracts only contain a limited number of the many active ingredients. It should be noted that Māori’s, The Māori are the indigenous Polynesian people of New Zealand now famous for their absence of arthritis, consumed the Green-lipped mussel whole and raw. While processing the Green-lipped mussel into an extract, many ingredients are either removed or become damaged and therefore less effective. This results in various commercial products that contain only the fatty acids of the mussel where glucosamine and chondroitin have been lost. Other products contain mostly glucosamine without most of the beneficial fatty acids, proteins and other ingredients. For this reason Synofit does not use extracts from Green-lipped mussel, instead of using GLMax®, the 100 percent pure and proprietary liquefied Green-lipped mussel.

Why does Synofit not use Green-lipped mussel powder?

Other products based on the Green-lipped mussel are sold as a powder or capsules containing the same powder. The process to make such a powder involves many steps, such as heating, that result in either deactivation or total loss, of many of the beneficial ingredients. Therefore Synofit has chosen to liquefy the Green-lipped mussel into its proprietary GLMax® that maintains all active ingredients of the mussel. In addition, the liquid forms ensure a rapid and complete absorption of the active ingredients into the bloodstream. It has been reported in numerous scientific publications that other formulations such as powders are only partially absorbed. Since GLMax® is so well absorbed the effective dosages can also be lower. The Green-lipped mussel thrives in a special coastal area of New Zeeland referred to as the Marlborough Sounds. This area is now well protected from influences such as pollution to ensure that the Green-lipped mussel can continue to grow here. The “International Conservation Organization, Blue Ocean Institute,” has classified the New Zeeland Green-lipped mussel as one of the two most eco-friendly seafood’s available on the planet.
